LED/LASER THERAPY (LLLT/PBMT)

What is Photobiomodulation - LED/Laser Therapy?

Lymphoedema related laser therapy is also known as Photobiomodulation Therapy (PBMT) or Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT).

This treatment uses specific wavelengths of light to support the body’s natural cellular repair processes. It may assist in the management of pain, inflammation, swelling, tissue tightness and muscular spasm, while supporting circulation and oxygen delivery to affected tissues.

Our clinic uses a medical-grade photobiomodulation laser system that is registered with the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). The treatment produces no significant heat and is designed to deliver light energy beneath the skin to the targeted tissues.

PBMT may be incorporated into a broader lymphoedema treatment plan alongside techniques such as manual lymphatic drainage, compression therapy, exercise and self-management education.

How does Photobiomodulation ( LED/Laser Therapy) work?

When LLLT is applied to the skin, the light is absorbed by light-sensitive components within the cells, particularly within the mitochondria—the powerhouses of our cells. This can increase cellular energy production and trigger a series of biological responses that support tissue repair and help regulate inflammation.

These cellular processes can assist with healing and help reduce inflammation, swelling, pain and tissue tightness. Rather than simply masking symptoms, PBMT aims to support the body’s natural recovery processes and may be incorporated into a broader lymphoedema treatment plan.

LED/Laser Therapy

  • Improves neurological function

  • Is natural and safe

  • Is non-invasive

  • Provides drug free pain relief

  • Requires no down time post treatment

  • Complements other treatment methods such as Massage and Trigger Point Therapy

Potential Benefits of LED/Laser Therapy

  • Pain relief

  • Reducing inflammation (including neuro-inflammation)

  • Reducing swelling

  • Improved blood circulation

  • Boosts the immune system

  • Increased joint flexibility

  • Speeds up wound healing

  • Speeds up recovery time post injury/surgery

Other benefits can include

  • Improved endurance

  • Reduced muscle fatigue

  • Improved strength

  • Reduction in the likelihood of injury

  • Faster recovery time post injury

  • Reduction in the change of re-injury

Conditions that can be effectively treated with LED/Laser Therapy

  • Lymphoedema

  • Frozen shoulder

  • Repetitive Strain Injuries

  • Chronic Pain

  • TMJ (jaw) dysfunction

  • Sporting Injuries, including muscles, tendons & ligaments

  • Athletic performance

  • Energy levels

  • Pre & Post-surgical wounds

  • Dental pain

  • Peripheral nerve damage

  • Autoimmune conditions

  • Neurological inflammation

  • Neck and back pain & injuries

  • Disc herniation

  • Osteoarthritis -including hip, knee and other joints

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis

  • Tinnitus

  • Sinusitis

  • Headaches

  • Acute and chronic migraines

  • Wound healing & scarring

  • Fracture Healing

  • Plantar Fasciitis

LED/Laser Therapy is by no means limited to the above. As it has a positive overall effect on boosting the body’s immune system. The benefits of using LLLT as a part of an integrative approach to maintaining health and wellness cannot be over emphasised.

Side effects of LED/Laser Therapy

There are actually no known side effects of PMBT. It is a non-invasive, fast acting, safe, effective and drug free treatment method. Although there are no known side effects of PBMT, if the condition being treated is a chronic one, some individuals may experience a slight increase in their level of discomfort. This is however, a short term response that soon settles and is due to the increase in blood supply to the affected area and is in fact a sign that healing is taking place.

Treatment Protocol
You may notice an improvement following your very first LLLT. In as few as 4-6 treatments, you will benefit from improved blood circulation, less inflammation and cell revitalisation, enabling the body to start healing, thus effectively treating the underlying cause of the pain, rather than just treating the symptoms. PBMT also has the benefits of having a cumulative effect with each treatment building on the previous one.

Scientific research behind LED/Laser Therapy
There is an extensive list of PBMT scientific research articles supporting the efficacy of this form of therapy. In fact, there are 1000’s of studies available with new ones being added constantly.

Benefits of LED/Laser Therapy
Many individuals are recognising the benefits of having PBMT as part of an integrative approach to health and wellness. The pressures of day to day life can overtime lead to a build-up of oxidative stress in the body, which is the major cause of inflammation, cell degeneration and the aging process. PBMT is rapidly gaining recognition as a key therapeutic intervention for reducing oxidative stress.
LED/Laser Therapy is absolutely PAIN FREE!! There is little or no sensation during treatment. Occasionally one feels a mild, soothing warmth or tingling.

PBMT treatment is a powerful tool to stimulate the lymph nodes and therefore reduce inflammation. It assists in rapid healing post surgery and reduction of swelling in limbs often caused by cancer treatment or injury.
